HypnoBirthing FAQs

How is the HypnoBirthing®  Course Structured?
There are a total of 5 classes, once a week for 5 weeks. Each class is 2.5 hours long.

How much does the course cost?
Private class - 20,000 Baht per couple

What do the course fees include?
The HypnoBirthing textbook, 2 relaxation CDs and all class handouts.

When is the best time to attend class?
I recommend attending the class early into your second trimester. This allows you plenty of time to practice and master the various techniques offered in the class.

I am due to give birth in less than 5 weeks, is a condensed class available? Does it matter that I won’t have so long to practice the techniques that I learn in class?
Firstly,  it’s is never too late to add HypnoBirthing to your toolkit! Even from the very first class, HypnoBirthing works to help parents eliminate their fears and misconceptions surrounding childbirth. A 5 week course really is the best format but if your due date is fast approaching, drop me a message and we’ll work together to see if we can accommodate you with a program in under 5 weeks.

What’s the difference between attending the class and just buying the book to self study at home?
For mothers who do not have the option of an in person class, the HypnoBirthing book is a great option. With that said, there are many advantages to joining a class if you have one available to you. As a certified HypnoBirthing practitioner, I can demonstrate the techniques described in the book and help to coach you in practicing the proper methods. The in person course also offers many additional scripts and tips that are not in the textbook. The HypnoBirthing Fear Release is a great example of this and is a powerful session designed to help parents let go of their fears and limiting thoughts about parenting and birth. In addition to this, the in person class helps bring the course to life and for those learning within a group, the friendship and comradery found amongst other parents can go a long way, even after your babies are born.

What exactly is hypnosis?
When most people think of hypnosis, they imagine people being hypnotised to do something wacky such as walking around clucking like a chicken! In fact, much like birth is not typically the way that it is portrayed on TV, neither is hypnosis. In reality, hypnosis is a normal and natural state – a change in our brain wave activity that we all experiences throughout the day. Have you ever been driving your car home, intending to stop at the supermarket on your way only to find yourself pulling into your driveway as if on autopilot? That’s hypnosis. We enter states of hypnosis each day; reading a good book, doing the washing up, watching your favorite TV show and losing track of time, that’s hypnosis.

If I use HypnoBirthing, will I be unconscious or will I be able to remember my birth experience?
Mothers who use HypnoBirthing are usually relaxed but are definitely not unconscious! HypnoBirthing helps mothers to reduce the fear and tension commonly associated with giving birth and make the most of their body’s natural endorphins. Self-hypnosis techniques can be used to help mothers to be aware of their body’s contractions while determining the extent to which they feel the physical sensations.
HypnoBirthing mothers tend to remain in good spirits, feel in control during their labours and are fully present at the time their babies are born.

Will HypnoBirthing be useful to me if I  don’t opt for a natural childbirth or if medical  intervention or a Caesarean birth becomes necessary?
Yes, absolutely!  Whatever kind of birth you have the relaxation techniques learned in HypnoBirthing classes can be used to the benefit of both you and your baby. The techniques are also wonderful to use even once the baby is here! In the event that medical intervention is necessary, HypnoBirthing techniques can be used to help you remain feeling calm and in control. HypnoBirthing mothers who have opted for Caesarean birth out of preference or medical necessity have reported feeling totally relaxed before, during and after the birth.

Is it true that I will experience a  pain-free birth with HypnoBirthing?
Although HypnoBirthing  does not promise painless birthing, many HypnoBirthing mothers do report  having a relatively pain-free birth or at least one that they were able to easily manage. Fear is one of the greatest contributors to the cause of pain in a birthing woman’s body, so once fear is eliminated, birthing can be a much more  comfortable experience since a relaxed mother’s body will produce more of nature’s own relaxants, endorphins, HypnoBirthing mothers may still experience the physical sensations of labour such as tightening  or pressure; but most describe their birth experience as working with their body  through the sensations rather than fighting against it, and therefore avoiding the excruciating pain that is  often described by women who choose other methods of childbirth preparation.

How is the Birth Companion involved?
Having a Birth Companion of the mother’s choice is a fundamental part of the HypnoBirthing experience.  He or she practices the HypnoBirthing techniques with the mother in order to help her to prepare for deep relaxation. During labour. the Birth Companion guides the birthing mother through various hypnosis prompts, relaxation techniques, deepening methods, and visualizations. The Birth Companion also provides comfort measures, joins in welcoming the new baby and sometimes even receiving the baby as they emerge!

How is HypnoBirthing different from other childbirth preparation methods?
Unlike other childbirth methods that teach you how to cope  with and manage pain, HypnoBirthing is based on the premise that childbirth does  not necessarily need to be painful if the mother is properly prepared and  relaxed. When women understand that pain is caused by constrictor hormones,  created by fear, they learn, instead, to release fear thus creating  endorphins—the feel good hormones. They are then able to change their  expectations of long, painful labor and are able to replace them with  expectations of a more comfortable birthing.  Rather than exhausting, shallow  breathing and the distraction techniques of typical “prepared childbirth” programs, HypnoBirthing parents learn deep abdominal breathing and total  relaxation, enabling the laboring mother to work in harmony with her body and  her baby. This allows her to achieve a shorter and more comfortable labor for  herself and baby.
